About the tour

What the Special Camping Trek is like

An experience for those who want to discover the Lençóis Maranhenses with more time to hike, rest and enjoy the lagoons. The Special Trek spreads the 37 km of the route across four days, with long rest periods in the communities and overnights in support facilities along the way.

Along the route, you'll see landscapes of dunes, lagoons and small oases, and experience the daily life of the traditional communities that live inside the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park.

Day 1

Barreirinhas → Baixa Grande → Zona do Peadouro

Peadouro Area

14 km | approximately 4 to 5h of hiking

The day starts early, with departure from Barreirinhas around 4:30am or from Atins around 6:30am, traveling in a 4x4 vehicle to the region near Rio Negro.

After a light breakfast and a stop to watch the sunrise, we begin the hike through the dunes and lagoons to the Baixa Grande oasis. It's about 6 km of hiking, arriving around 10:30am.

After lunch and a rest period, we continue for another 8 km to the Peadouro Area, where camp will be set up.

Dinner and overnight in camping.

Day 2

Zona do Peadouro → Queimada dos Britos

Queimada dos Britos

7 km | approximately 2h30 of hiking

After breakfast, departure around 6am to continue through the dunes and lagoons to the Queimada dos Britos community.

Arrival happens in the morning, with time for lunch, rest, and a swim in the lagoon. The rest of the day can be enjoyed peacefully in the community and its surroundings.

The overnight will be in the Queimada dos Britos community itself, in a hammock, with a local family. If the participant prefers to sleep in a tent, it can be set up on-site upon request.

Dinner and overnight in the community.

Day 3

Queimada dos Britos → Lagoa da Lua

Lagoa da Lua

8 km | approximately 3h of hiking

The day starts with free time in the morning to enjoy the community, explore its surroundings, and swim in the lagoons.

After lunch and rest, we resume the hike around 3pm, continuing for about 8 km to Lagoa da Lua.

Upon arrival, there will be time for a swim in the lagoon and to watch the sunset before dinner.

Overnight in camping.

Day 4

Lagoa da Lua → Lagoa do Junco/Cajueiro → Santo Amaro

Santo Amaro

8 km | approximately 3h of hiking

After breakfast, departure around 6am for the last hike of the trek.

We continue through the dunes and lagoons to the Lagoa do Junco/Cajueiro region, with a stop for swimming and taking in the scenery.

Arrival happens around 9am. From there, a 4x4 vehicle takes you to Santo Amaro, with arrival expected around 10:30am.

End of the trek.

Before you book

Good to know

The hike is done over sand and dunes.

Even with the sections spread over four days, it's important to be prepared to walk on sandy terrain.

You'll carry your own backpack and sleeping pad.

The sleeping pad is provided by the agency and is lightweight. The larger camping equipment is carried by the support guide.

The overnight in Queimada dos Britos is in the community itself.

Standard accommodation is in a hammock with a local family. For those who prefer a tent, setup can be requested on-site.

The lagoons depend on the rainfall pattern.

The amount of water and trail conditions can vary throughout the year.

You can leave a support bag.

Up to 10 kg of luggage per person is stored in Barreirinhas and sent to Santo Amaro to be picked up at the end of the trek.
