An experience through the heart of the lençóis

A 32 km trek through the heart of the Lençóis Maranhenses, passing through the Baixa Grande and Queimada dos Britos oases and experiencing the daily life of the communities living inside the National Park.

The Classic Trek is one of the most complete ways to explore the Lençóis Maranhenses.

Over three days, you cross dunes and lagoons through the interior of the National Park, passing through two of the region's main oases: Baixa Grande and Queimada dos Britos.

Beyond the landscapes, the trek offers a chance to connect with the native communities. Nights are spent in hammocks at the homes of families living in the oases, making the trip an experience that goes far beyond a walk across the dunes.

Baixa Grande OasisDay 1

Barreirinhas → Oásis Baixa Grande

Baixa Grande Oasis

Hike: approximately 6 km

Hiking time: 2 to 3 hours

Overnight: Baixa Grande Oasis

The day starts early. Pickup in Barreirinhas begins at 04:30, with participants collected at their inns. For participants staying in Atins, pickup begins at 06:30.

We travel by 4x4 vehicle to the region near Rio Negro, on an off-road route of approximately two hours along the access road to the National Park.

Along the way, we make a stop for breakfast and to watch the sunrise.

From there our trek through the heart of the Lençóis begins. It's approximately 6 km to Baixa Grande Oasis, with time to enjoy the scenery and take a dip in the lagoons.

Arrival at the oasis is expected around 10:30.

After lunch and a rest period, we head back to the dunes to enjoy the lagoons and watch the sunset.

At the end of the day, we return to the community for dinner and to spend the night in a hammock at a native family's home.

Included this day: breakfast, lunch, dinner and overnight stay.

Queimada dos Britos OasisDay 2

Oásis Baixa Grande → Oásis Queimada dos Britos

Queimada dos Britos Oasis

Hike: approximately 12 km

Hiking time: about 5 hours

Overnight: Queimada dos Britos Oasis

The second day starts early. Breakfast is served around 04:30 and, at 05:00, we begin the trek toward Queimada dos Britos Oasis.

It's approximately 12 km of trekking through the heart of the Lençóis Maranhenses.

Along the way, we cross Rio Negro, watch the sunrise and make stops to swim in the lagoons.

Arrival at Queimada dos Britos is expected around 10:30, when lunch will be served.

After a rest period, we head back to the dunes during the afternoon to enjoy the lagoons again and watch the sunset.

At the end of the day, we return to the community for dinner and rest.

The night will be spent in a hammock, at a native family's home.

Included this day: breakfast, lunch, dinner and overnight stay.

Santo AmaroDay 3

Oásis Queimada dos Britos → Santo Amaro

Santo Amaro

Hike: approximately 14 km

Departure: around 03:00

Arrival in Santo Amaro: approximately 10:00–10:30

The last day begins in the early hours.

Breakfast is served around 02:30 and, at 03:00, we begin the trek toward the Lagoa do Junco/Cajueiro region.

It's approximately 14 km of trekking. The early departure lets you enjoy the first hours of the day, take in the sky and the sunrise, and make stops to swim in the lagoons along the way.

Arrival at the Lagoa do Junco/Cajueiro region is expected around 09:00.

From there, we continue by 4x4 vehicle to Santo Amaro.

Arrival in town is expected around 10:00–10:30, when the trek officially ends.

Is the Classic Trek right for me?

The trek is rated moderate and requires the fitness to walk several kilometers over dunes and sandy terrain for three days.

Where will we sleep?

The two nights are spent at the Baixa Grande and Queimada dos Britos oases, in hammocks at native families' homes.

Do I need to carry my backpack?

Yes. Each participant must carry their personal belongings during the hike. We recommend bringing only the essentials.

Are the lagoons full all year round?

No. The amount of water varies with each year's rainfall. In general, the full-lagoon period runs from April to September, but conditions may vary.

What time do we arrive in Santo Amaro?

The plan is to reach Santo Amaro between 10:00 and 10:30 on the third day.

Can I do the trek solo?

Yes. The trek can be done individually, but the rate varies according to the number of participants. Check the rate table above.
