An experience through the heart of the Lençóis

A 48 km trek through the heart of the Lençóis Maranhenses, passing through the oases of Baixa Grande, Queimada dos Britos and Rancharia, with four days of hiking, lagoons, dunes and contact with the native communities.

The 4-Day Trek is an option for those who want to live a more complete experience through the heart of the Lençóis Maranhenses.

Beyond the oases of Baixa Grande and Queimada dos Britos, the tour includes a night in the village of Rancharia, deepening the experience of connecting with the communities that live inside the National Park.

Over the four days, there are approximately 48 km of hiking between dunes and lagoons, with stops for swimming, taking in the sunrise and sunset and moments of rest at the oases.

The three nights are spent in hammocks at native families' homes, offering an authentic experience of living alongside the communities of the Lençóis.

Baixa Grande OasisDay 1

Barreirinhas → Oásis Baixa Grande

Baixa Grande Oasis

Trek: approximately 6 km

Walking time: 2 to 3 hours

Overnight: Baixa Grande Oasis

The day starts early. Pickup in Barreirinhas begins at 4:30 AM, with participants collected from their guesthouses. For participants staying in Atins, pickup begins at 6:30 AM.

We travel by 4x4 vehicle to the area near the Rio Negro, on an off-road route of approximately two hours along the access road to the National Park.

Along the way, we make a stop for breakfast and to watch the sunrise.

From there our trek through the heart of the Lençóis begins. It's approximately 6 km to the Baixa Grande Oasis, with time to take in the scenery and enjoy a swim in the lagoons.

Arrival at the oasis is expected around 10:30 AM.

After lunch and a rest period, we head back to the dunes to enjoy the lagoons and watch the sunset.

At the end of the day, we return to the community for dinner and to spend the night in a hammock at a local family's home.

Queimada dos Britos OasisDay 2

Oásis Baixa Grande → Oásis Queimada dos Britos

Queimada dos Britos Oasis

Trek: approximately 12 km

Walking time: about 5 hours

Overnight: Queimada dos Britos Oasis

The second day starts early. Breakfast is served around 4:30 AM and, at 5 AM, we begin the trek toward the Queimada dos Britos Oasis.

It's approximately 12 km of trekking through the heart of the Lençóis Maranhenses.

Along the way, we cross the Rio Negro, watch the sunrise, and make stops to swim in the lagoons.

Arrival at Queimada dos Britos is expected around 10:30 AM, when lunch will be served.

After a rest period, we head back to the dunes in the afternoon to enjoy the lagoons again and watch the sunset.

At the end of the day, we return to the community for dinner and rest.

The night is spent in a hammock at a local family's home.

Included this day: breakfast, lunch, dinner, and overnight stay.

RanchariaDay 3

Oásis Queimada dos Britos → Rancharia

Rancharia

Trek: approximately 14 km

Walking time: about 6 hours

Overnight: Rancharia settlement

The third day starts early. Breakfast is served around 3:30 AM and, at 4 AM, we begin the trek toward the settlement of Rancharia.

It's approximately 14 km of trekking, with stops to swim and moments to enjoy the lagoons and the scenery of the Lençóis Maranhenses.

Arrival at Rancharia is expected around 10 AM, followed by lunch around 11 AM.

Rancharia is a small community located inside the National Park, made up of families who live in the region. During our stay, we have the chance to learn a little more about the community's daily life and way of living.

The region is also home to the Bicudo Gordo Lagoon, one of the park's standout lagoons.

After resting, we head back to the dunes in the afternoon to swim in the lagoons and watch the sunset.

At the end of the day, we return to the community for dinner and to spend the night in a hammock at a local family's home.

Santo AmaroDay 4

Rancharia → Lagoa do Junco/Cajueiro → Santo Amaro

Santo Amaro

Trek: approximately 16 km

Departure: around 4 AM

Arrival in Santo Amaro: approximately 10:00–10:30 AM

The final day starts before dawn. After breakfast, we begin the trek around 4 AM toward the Junco/Cajueiro Lagoon.

It's approximately 16 km of trekking, taking an average of 5 hours.

Along the way, we make a stop to watch the sunrise and enjoy a swim in one of the region's lagoons.

Arrival at the Junco Lagoon is expected around 9 AM. After time for a swim and rest, we head by 4x4 vehicle directly to Santo Amaro.

Arrival in the town is expected around 10:00–10:30 AM, when the crossing officially ends.

Is the 4-Day Trek right for me?

The trek is rated as moderate and requires being willing to walk several kilometers over dunes and sandy terrain for four days.

Where will we sleep?

The three nights are spent at the Baixa Grande and Queimada dos Britos oases and in the Rancharia settlement, in hammocks at local families' homes.

Do I need to carry my backpack?

Yes. Each participant must carry their personal belongings during the trek. We recommend bringing only the essentials.

Are the lagoons full all year round?

No. The amount of water varies with each year's rainfall. In general, the full-lagoon season runs from April to September, but conditions may vary.

What time do we arrive in Santo Amaro?

The expected arrival in Santo Amaro is between 10:00 and 10:30 on the fourth day.

Can I do the trek solo?
